FL Medicaid Benefits
If you don't properly plan for a nursing home stay well in advance, it can easily cost you anywhere from $6,000 to $7000 per month or maybe even more.
This works out to be from $72,000 to $84,000 annually.
In Florida the average private-pay, room-and-board rate at a skilled nursing facility in Florida costs between $5,000 and $6,000 per month. Some facilities charge even more. There are additional charges for items and services, such as laundry, transportation to and from the facility, incidentals, and over-the-counter/prescription medications. It is not uncommon for total private-pay costs at nursing facilities to exceed $6,000 per month. Many families cannot afford to pay such excessive amounts — which as you can see easily exceed $70,000 per year — for private-pay residents at skilled nursing facilities.
The Florida Medicaid program can offer a solution to the high cost of nursing home and assisted living care; however, an individual must qualify for Medicaid assistance. The problem with qualifying for assistance from Medicaid is that the Medicaid programs have strict asset and income limitations. With proper planning, however, even individuals whose assets and income greatly exceed the limits for Medicaid can qualify for benefits.
The Florida Medicaid rate amount paid by the nursing home resident is referred to as the patient responsibility. The patient responsibility may be even lower if the Medicaid applicant is married. For an unmarried person, patient responsibility equals the following:
Resident’s Gross Monthly Income
- subtract $35/Month (personal cash)
- subtract Cost of Resident’s Health Insurance (if any)
- equals Amount of Resident’s Income to be Paid to the
- Nursing Home (patient responsibility)
The Medicaid program is also a comprehensive health insurance program. It pays for the cost of a nursing home or assisted living resident’s inpatient and outpatient medical care, hospitalization, surgery, dialysis, transportation to and from hospitals and physician’s offices, psychiatric care and counseling, medical supplies, and over-the-counter/prescription medications. Under certain circumstances, the Florida Medicaid program may also cover the cost of dental care, hearing aids and eyeglasses.
